9 Years Strong

September 22, 2013

You may know that I have a remarkable daughter. She turned 9 yesterday. She really wanted a friends party and it is a testament to how much I love her that I agreed. I hate parties. Scratch that. I hate HOSTING parties. I actually like parties, but hosting stresses me out. As a Mormon, I have been organizing events and gatherings since I was a teenager, so I feel like I should be good at this, but I am not a natural.

Things I learned:
• Nearly nine-year-olds have a hard time picking just nine friends with whom to party.
• It is even harder to decide which movie to show your friends in your back-yard movie projection.
• You cannot trust people’s RSVPs (no judgment: I’m the world’s worst RSVPer)
• Lily’s favorite pizza is Hawaiian. I had NO idea.
• Nine-year old girls are LOUD.
• They don’t so much love a schedule.
• Lily, bless her heart, has inherited my desire for people to have fun ONLY within the boundaries she has established, i.e.: following the schedule.
• This girl is resilient: after breaking down in tears about her friends being too “wild and crazy,” she recovered and headed back in.
• When girls play hide-and-seek, they never “find” the four-year-old brother, no matter how many times he begs them to.
• All’s well that ends well.

I will be interested to see when Lily wants to have a friends party again. As she said, this one didn’t go exactly as she expected it would. That happens. As I was sweating through the event, I realized that this is the kind of thing that makes me feel the most single: it should be a carefree day full of happy memories and yet I am just running around trying to buy, clean, arrange, and put out fires. Like late guests and clogged sinks and cutting cake/scooping ice cream for 12 people at once, and mosquitoes mosquitoes mosquitoes, which are somehow a much bigger deal to nine-year-olds than anyone else, and no, I don’t have any bug spray. It’s September! So, anyway. It’s over. I THINK the girls had fun. I’m still recovering.

Happy Birthday, Lily!

I was a single mom and I know what you mean about kids’ parties. Doing it all yourself – and trying to take pictures!

    ♥Happy Birthday, Lily♥

Ha! No pictures, Elaine. Something’s got to give. Thanks for the shout-out!

BTW – My oldest grandchild is named Lily, she was 9 in July.

Can you guess who played harp at her parents’ ring ceremony/reception 10 years ago this month?

This is wonderful…I can so relate! I love that both of us have these beautiful 9-year-olds in our lives, Ly!

    Miss you! Always…
