Way Back WXXI

October 26, 2010

I don’t know why, but our local NPR and PBS station has an annual open-house. It is always a zoo (they give away free stuff!). We go anyway. How else are the boys going to be on Clifford?

This event is a very mysterious one to me. How does a non-profit afford all this free stuff to give away? What do they gain from our presence? Why is the Big Bird so sickly looking? Why is the Razor-shark there? What is a razor-shark? Why (on earth) would anyone choose a razor-shark as the mascot for a basketball team? Is this shark going to eat my son?

Obviously, it was a very confusing day for me. I am pretty sure we will be back, though.

Afterwards, we made our first trip to the famous Nick Tahous. We went with friends (who eat there free!) and the kids enjoyed each other. I just can’t do a garbage plate, though.

Aren’t my kids lucky? Remind them for me when they hit 13, will you?

I can’t answer the questions about Big Bird or the razor shark but you answered your other questions. Corporations that want some free publicity or to feel good about their community spirit donate all of the free stuff so the station isn’t paying for any of that (same thing with pledge drive “gifts”).

The station gains your goodwill so some time when you are watching and they ask you for money you will think, “They gave us some free stuff. Maybe I will give them some money.” Or you feel guilty and will give them some money because they gave you all that free stuff and happy memories. Maybe not this year or in 5 years but in the next 10-15 years they are counting on your feeling connected to WXXI enough for you to make a donation. And if not you, then Lily, Peter, and Amos will do it when they have disposable income.

Wow, Anne–that sound kind of cynical. Or just the reality of the non-profit world? Anyway, yes, I would guess that WXXI will continue to get money from me and mine for years to come. MAYBE it will make up for those free calendars and Word Girl stickers. Maybe.
