I need some context clues. When/where/how have you encountered it? It is indeed strange.

If you click on the image, you will see that I first saw it on Awkward Family Photos, but I have a hard time imagining someone walking into Olan Mills with a watermelon and a handgun for their portrait. What context would make the combination of pregnant lady, deadly weapon, and fruit in front of a backdrop make sense? I have a really good imagination, I think, but I can’t place one for this image.

It’s a photo from the Provident Living Handbook, showing the suggested means of protecting your food and posterity after the coming economic meltdown.
The image is meant to convey the wise counsel that, in the trying times ahead, people should continue to multiply and replenish the earth and should also grow and harvest their own food, but they will need to be prepared to protect themselves and their families and food storage from those who were not so prepared. Or from zombies, whichever come first.
